Job Description & Person Specification:

MUA Business Review Project Manager Brief December 2020 Aim The Modes Users Association (MUA) is seeking to recruit a Business Review consultant to help the MUA Board review the organisation’s current activities, leading to recommendations for its future development. The review will look at key elements of the current MUA model, including Finance, Staffing, Governance, Product and Business Model.

The review will deliver robust options for appraisal by the MUA Board. Background Modes is the most popular collections software used in UK museums. The MUA was formed as a not-for-profit company in 1996 to provide support to the growing numbers of organisations and individuals using Modes. The MUA became a Company Limited by Guarantee in 1997 and owns the Modes suite of programs. The MUA has more than 680 members, who are users of the Modes programs. Since its inception in 1987 Modes software has been developed by collections management experts for collections management professionals. MUA Mission - To enable collections owners and managers to create, protect, manage and use their collections data for public benefit. MUA Vision - A world in which collections owners and managers can unlock the full potential of their collections information to broaden public access to and engagement with their collections. The MUA is led by a Board which meets three times a year. Currently the Board has 5 members, the majority of whom are museum or archive professionals. The Board is responsible for the overall administration and finances of the Association and ratifies the decisions of working groups. The MUA staff team, based in Derby, delivers software, support, training and consultancy services. Currently there is a staff of 3. The Business Review will inform the drafting of the Business Plan for the period 2021 – 2024. We anticipate major changes in the heritage sector due to the impact of COVID- 19, and the need to adapt our offer to compete in a changing market. This period will be framed by two challenges, as our Software Development Partner will retire in April 2021 and our Services Manager will retire in April 2024. The Brief The brief for the consultant is to guide and facilitate a review involving members of the Board, staff team and partners. The consultant will need to develop a clear understanding of our current situation and challenges in order to shape options for review by the Board. In order to ensure these options are robust and evidence based we expect there may be the need to carry out or commission additional work in particular areas (e.g. financial review, marketing, staff structure). Any such elements recommended by the consultant would be separately contracted and funded.

• Experience and proven track record of delivering business review and transition
• Experience of working with membership organisations and not-for-profits
• Experience and proven track record of project management
• A broad understanding of the UK museum sector Supporting information The successful candidate will be expected to work from their own premises with occasional travel to the MUA Offices in Derby.
